Google UX Design Certificate
Mobile app and website design for social good
CHALLENGE
Create a solution that leads to "collective social good"

SOLUTION
Design a job search app to help college seniors and recent college graduates find meaningful employment

HOW I HELPED
As a part of the Google UX Design Certificate Course, I followed the UX design process: empathize with users, define pain points, ideate solutions, create wireframes and prototypes, and test and iterate on designs
Roles: UX Writer, UX Researcher, Content Designer
Responsibilities: Conduct user research; develop wireframes, prototypes, and mockups; conduct usability studies; account for accessibility; and iterate on designs

USER RESARCH & PROBLEM STATEMENTS
College graduates gain functional capabilities and critical thinking skills during their undergraduate studies but are still unsure of the wide variety of job opportunities available to them based on their degree. I conducted user interviews and synthesized and analyzed data to better understand the user and their needs. I discovered that many recent college graduates are overwhelmed with the numerous job search options. They want to find meaningful work that is applicable to their majors. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users are open to a job search site that aggregate open jobs from various websites.
Personas
Based on my user research, I created fictional users whose problems, goals, and characteristics represent the needs of a larger group of users.

SITEMAP
I created a sitemap to outline and simplify the user journey. My goal was to make strategic information architecture designs that would improve the overall app navigation. The hierarchical structure was designed to make things simple and easy. I eventually used the job search sitemap to guide each screen’s design to ensure a cohesive and consistent experience across devices.

IDEATION
I did a quick ideation exercise using pen and paper to come up with ideas for how to design the app screens. My focus was specifically on the job search and job recommendations features.

MOCKUPS & PROTOTYPES
I created the initial designs for the job search app. The initial designs focused on job searching and saving functions to help users find jobs. I then created a low-fidelity prototype in Adobe XD that connected the user flow of finding and saving a job posting. I conducted a remote usability study to test the app with real users. Here are the top two findings:
-
Search: Users need more information on how to properly search, such as microcopy.
-
Profile screen: Users want to add as much information as possible to their profile pages.
I applied the UX design changes based on the insights from the usability studies and created a high-fidelity prototype in Adobe XD .
